Robby Yung is the CEO of The Sandbox and Animoca Brands' CEO of Investments, running a game whose developer Animoca bought in 2018 for US$4.875 million upfront. Only US$519,512 of that was cash, and The Sandbox's site footer calls it a subsidiary of Animoca Brands.
So the Sandbox CEO answers to a parent he also works for. His record runs from the reset post he signed on 30 September 2025, through the August 2026 bridge exploit, to a Studio launch set only for October.

How Did Robby Yung Come to Run The Sandbox?
Step 1: Metromedia, Redgate and One Media
Every career fact in this step comes from Animoca's own bio of Yung. He began in technology, building wireless telecom networks in China and Indonesia with Metromedia.
He founded Redgate Media Group, a Chinese television and outdoor media business that Inno-Tech Holdings later acquired. He also co-founded the magazine publisher One Media Group and took it to a listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Step 2: Animoca's Listing
Animoca's leadership page, read at 04:39 UTC on 3 October 2026, says Yung "served as the first CEO of Animoca Brands after taking the group public in 2015". Animoca's release of 7 October 2021 says he had been CEO since 2014, and the same release moved him to run the group's North American operations.
Step 3: The 2018 Pixowl Deal
Animoca announced on 27 August 2018 that it would buy all of Pixowl, the San Francisco studio behind The Sandbox, for US$4.875 million upfront. Its release on the Pixowl deal put the cash at US$519,512, or 10.7%, and paid the rest in Animoca shares locked up for up to 24 months. The game then counted 40 million downloads and over one million monthly active users. Yung ran Animoca at the time by the 2021 release's account, yet the deal announcement quotes co-founder Yat Siu and never names him.
Step 4: The 2025 Reset and the CEO Role
In August 2025, Animoca executive chairman Yat Siu said Yung would come in as CEO of The Sandbox, according to BlockchainGamer.biz's report of 28 August 2025. Siu said the founders would stay involved, Arthur Madrid as chairman and Sébastien Borget as an ambassador.
Yung signed The Sandbox 3.0 post on 30 September 2025 as "CEO, The Sandbox". The post bet the platform on AI creation tools and on SANDchain, a creator chain unveiled that day at TOKEN2049 in Singapore with a testnet planned for 14 October. It also pointed to restructuring updates the company had already shared.
On 18 September 2026, BlockchainGamer.biz published his interview on Sandbox Studio, which reported almost three years of work on the tools. They target developers already familiar with Unity and Unreal, the report says. Yung said "the goal here is not to automate game creation" because "that's how you get AI slop".

Set the 2018 price beside the 2026 exploit and one ratio jumps out. Animoca paid US$519,512 in cash for the whole studio in 2018. The Sandbox's post-mortem of 27 August 2026 puts the exploit's total economic impact at about US$1,496,784, which is 2.9 times that cash. The attacker captured US$987,000 of it by the post-mortem's count, and one of the two routes it used ran through a single SAND/WETH pool on Base. Bots kept refilling that pool after each sale, which is how a liquidity pool works by design. The attacker took about 90% of its ether 21 times in a row. The company closed the bridge on all three chains at 05:26 UTC on 22 August 2026, and it says no SAND has been withdrawn since 02:21 UTC that day.
Why Robby Yung's Story Matters Beyond The Sandbox
For founders: Selling to a listed parent can mean taking most of the price in its stock and, years later, one of its executives as your CEO. Pixowl's sellers took 89.3% of the upfront price in Animoca shares. In 2025 an Animoca executive took charge of the game they had built around the metaverse as a virtual future.
For investors: The exploit bill lands on The Sandbox treasury, which funds compensation one for one without minting any new SAND. The Sandbox's LAND parcels are metaverse NFTs that act as a digital economy's launchpad. The September 2026 interview says LAND owners will get advantages when they publish inside The Sandbox, with the precise benefits still being developed.
For traders: SAND's 2 October 2026 move came with no statement from the company. The Sandbox blog index, read at 04:32 UTC on 3 October 2026, carries no post after the 8 September compensation guide. So if you trade SAND, trade the dated items below and not a story the company hasn't told.
What Traders Should Watch
The Studio launch date: Sandbox Studio's public launch is provisionally planned for October. Neither the 18 September 2026 interview nor the blog index read at 04:32 UTC on 3 October 2026 gives a day. About 30 community creators got in through the alpha game jam, which The Sandbox posted on 2 July 2026, and its Beta Game Jam post followed on 12 August 2026.
The new bridge contracts: The post-mortem says no reopening decision has been made, and it also calls the exploited Base and BNB Smart Chain contracts permanently retired. Bridging to those chains returns only through new contracts at new addresses, with no date given.
The late claims deadline: The compensation guide of 8 September 2026 ran the claim window to 16:00 UTC on 22 September 2026. It accepts late claims case by case through the end of October, and holders who used a centralised exchange need no action because the company is working with those exchanges on their compensation.
SANDchain: The 30 September 2025 post put SANDchain's testnet on 14 October 2025 and targeted a creator monetization platform for the end of that year. The newest item in the SANDchain site's news list, read at 04:34 UTC on 3 October 2026, is dated 7 October 2025.
How to Trade the Trends Robby Yung Represents
Via crypto: SAND trades on Phemex spot as SAND / USDT, listed there since 19 January 2022, and its perpetual is delisted. Our guide to how spot trading works covers order types before you buy, and the generic futures page lists Phemex's live crypto perpetuals for broader exposure.
Via TradFi perpetuals: Yung's plan rests on AI creation tools and virtual worlds. If you want those themes without a token, Phemex's futures page carries stock perpetuals such as META / USDT on Meta Platforms and NVDA / USDT on Nvidia.
