Who Is Alex Blania? World Co-Founder Behind the Orb

Key Points

Who is Alex Blania? The World co-founder took World ID to banks at Money20/20 in mid-October 2026, and WLD's 9.04% gain began before the wire release.

Alex Blania is the co-founder of World and of Tools for Humanity who launched World ID for banking and finance at Money20/20 in mid-October 2026. World counts more than 18 million people holding its Proof of Human credential, the iris-checked proof that a user is a unique person.

World's press release on Blania's launch hit the newswire on a strong day for WLD, whose Phemex perpetual closed mid-October 9.04% higher as BTC slipped 0.21%. The timing doesn't prove the news drove it. By the last hourly close before the release, WLD had made 44.3% of that gain. The jump was also the smallest of the six 9%-plus days between the perpetual's mid-September 2026 relisting and that close.

Who Is Alex Blania?

Blania co-founded World, the network built around the World ID credential and the Worldcoin (WLD) token. Tools for Humanity's homepage names him its CEO, and World's early April 2025 event invitation described him as "CEO of Tools for Humanity."

Blania's company bets on proof of personhood, a way for a website to confirm that you're one unique human. The Orb, an iris-scanning device his company launched, issues that proof once per person. One credential per human is the defense against the fake-account floods covered in how blockchains prevent Sybil attacks.

TIME put Blania on its TIME100 AI 2025 list in late August 2025 as co-founder and CEO of Tools for Humanity. Blania told the magazine that "what we are building will be a very important trust infrastructure for human interaction on the internet."

Alex Blania's Career: From Worldcoin to World

Tools for Humanity's homepage says Blania founded the company in 2019 with Sam Altman, whom it lists as chairman.

Worldcoin went live in July 2023, and the Worldcoin Foundation's launch post named Alex Blania a co-founder of the project along with Altman and Max Novendstern. It quoted him saying that "in the age of AI, the need for proof of personhood is no longer a topic of serious debate."

The launch brought crowds. In early September 2023, Blania told a Kenyan parliamentary committee in Nairobi that demand for World ID had jumped "thirty times practically overnight" after it. He said the team "could have done a better job" managing that demand and the queues it caused.

Blania and Altman introduced the World Network, or World for short, at a San Francisco event in mid-October 2024. World's recap of the event said the old name "no longer encapsulates the mission of the project."

The post introducing Merge Labs in mid-January 2026 listed Alex Blania among six names and gave none of them a title. Merge Labs describes itself as a research lab developing new approaches to brain-computer interfaces.

What Did Alex Blania Announce in October 2026?

Blania presented World ID for banking and finance on stage at Money20/20 in Las Vegas. The wire release on PR Newswire says the suite helps banks fight deepfake fraud and AI-driven impersonation in customer accounts and in AI agents. It calls the launch World's first industry-specific focus for World ID.

The suite Blania presented pairs the World ID app with World ID for Zoom and World ID for Agents. World's announcement names five design partners, among them Bain Capital and Pantera Capital.

Did the Money20/20 Launch Move WLD?

WLD's Phemex perpetual closed mid-October at 0.533 USDT, up 9.04% from the previous day's 0.4888 close, on the day PR Newswire carried World's release. That was the fifth-largest one-day gain among the 137 Phemex perpetuals with a move on that day.

Phemex perpetual
Move on the day

VVV

-0.08%
RENDER
-0.11%
BTC
-0.21%
TAO
-0.88%
ICP
-0.90%
NEAR
-2.17%

Neither BTC nor ETH rose that day, and four of the five AI-linked perpetuals in the table closed lower, with VVV the lone gainer. So WLD's jump came from something specific to WLD.

The release naming Blania went out partway through the day. By the last hourly close before it, WLD was already up 4.01%, or 44.3% of the day's 0.0442 USDT gain. The day's two biggest hourly gains, both 2.42%, came about seven hours either side of the release. World's blog dates its post a day earlier than the wire. So the tape offers no clean before and after.

Big up days aren't rare for WLD. It closed 9% or more higher on six of the 38 full days from its mid-September 2026 relisting to the mid-October close, and this gain was the smallest of the six.

Blania's launch coincides with the move, and the tape can't show that it caused it.

Method: WLD and BTC moves come from daily and hourly closes on Phemex's public klines API, counting only bars after the relisting. Each move divides by the previous close. As a check, the WLD/USDT spot pair also rose 9.04%, and CoinGecko's snapshots at the turn of each day give 9.07%.

What Is Tools for Humanity?

Tools for Humanity is the technology company Blania co-founded, and it builds World's Orb and apps from San Francisco and Munich with more than 500 staff, according to its homepage.

World's late April 2025 fees post calls the World Foundation the project's steward and says it owns the IP for the World ID protocol and the Orb. The mid-October 2026 release describes Tools for Humanity as "a contributor to World" and names Sandro Herbig as its president.

World ID is a working example of what decentralized identity is, a credential that stays with its holder. World's banking announcement says Proof of Attributes confirms details such as nationality or age from an official ID and "reveals only the requested information."

How Close Is World to a Billion People?

World set its own target in mid-October 2024, when it said its new Orb would help scale the network to 1 billion humans. Days earlier, its event invitation had counted "~7 million verified humans" and spoken of reaching "700 million and beyond."

World's later counts climbed, with 12.3 million people holding an Orb-verified World ID in late April 2025, when more than 1,500 Orbs were live in 23 countries. Its mid-October 2026 posts put holders of a Proof of Human at more than 18 million, which is more than 1.8% of the billion it targeted in 2024.

All three counts are World's own, each worded differently, and none of the four posts that carry them cites an outside audit. World also has rivals for the same proof-of-human job, among them the network built by Humanity Protocol founder Terence Kwok.

Is World ID Safe? What Regulators Have Ordered

World says World ID is private by design, and two European data regulators have answered with orders and a warning.

Bavaria's data-protection authority, BayLDA, leads the case because Tools for Humanity made Germany its main establishment in Europe. In its December 2024 decision, BayLDA ordered a GDPR-compliant deletion procedure "within one month of the decision taking effect." It also ordered the deletion of certain records "previously collected without a sufficient legal basis," and it said the company had told it that it would appeal.

In mid-February 2026, Spain's AEPD sent Tools for Humanity a warning after the company announced a restart in Spain. The company then told the agency it would postpone the relaunch. The agency had ordered it in 2024 to stop collecting personal data in Spain, a measure Spain's National Court upheld.

World's defense is its cryptography. Its August 2023 explainer says World ID runs on zero-knowledge proofs, which confirm a claim without revealing the details. World's October 2024 Orb post says that when you verify, the Orb sends its images only to your phone and then deletes them for good.

How to Trade WLD on Phemex

The token of Blania's network trades on Phemex as the WLD/USDT perpetual and the WLD/USDT spot pair, but the perpetual has had a break. A notice in early August 2026 delisted it, and trading stopped in mid-August. Phemex relisted it in mid-September 2026 with leverage of up to 50x and funding every 8 hours.

Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin. Price targets belong to the forecast side, and our Worldcoin price prediction for 2026-2030 maps the levels.

  1. Open a Phemex account and deposit the USDT you plan to trade.

  2. For spot, search WLD and choose the WLD/USDT pair.

  3. For futures, open the WLD/USDT perpetual, pick a margin mode and set your leverage before you place the order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the World ID Orb?

The Orb is the iris-scanning device behind World ID's Proof of Human. Blania told Kenyan lawmakers in September 2023 that it converts an iris picture into an "iris code," a unique series of numbers. World says the Orb erases those images after each check.

Who founded Worldcoin?

Worldcoin's July 2023 launch post names Sam Altman, Alex Blania and Max Novendstern as the project's co-founders. The project took the name World in October 2024, and its token kept the Worldcoin name and the WLD ticker.

Is Alex Blania the CEO of Tools for Humanity?

Tools for Humanity's homepage lists him as CEO, and TIME's AI list for 2025 called him the company's co-founder and CEO. World's mid-October 2026 announcement and the wire release describe him only as a World co-founder.

What is Alex Blania's link to Merge Labs?

Merge Labs, a research lab working on brain-computer interfaces, put his name among six on the post that introduced it in mid-January 2026. That post gave no titles, so it doesn't say what role he holds there.
