IOST (IOST) is a Layer 1 blockchain that the IOST Foundation pitches for tokenizing real-world assets, and its token jumped 41.04% in a single mid-October 2026 day. The chain has produced blocks since February 2019, and the jump came six days after go-iost v4.0.0, its first software release since June 2024.
IOST's mid-October close on CoinMarketCap was $0.001055, up from $0.0007479 a day earlier. Trading volume reached $50.66 million that day, 12.74 times the previous day's $3.975 million. That rise was the second-largest one-day gain in the year to the mid-October close, behind only a 121.8% jump on 9 September 2026.

What Is IOST (IOST)?
The IOST Foundation's website headlines IOST as "Designed for Tokenization, Built for Anything" and uses the name for both a blockchain and its native coin. The chain's first block after genesis landed on 11 February 2019, and it has added roughly two blocks a second on average since then.
IOST's own chain is a Layer 1, the base tier in Phemex Academy's map of blockchain layers from Layer 1 to Layer 3, and the coin also circulates as a BEP-20 token on BNB Chain. The Foundation also pitches a Layer 2 on BNB Chain for payments and tokenized assets, and its site links an explorer and a bridge for it.
IOTA and IoTeX are separate coins with similar names, and Apple's iOS is phone software with no link to the chain.
Why Is IOST Trending?
In the six days before the jump, the IOST crypto news on the project's GitHub and Medium channels was about software. IOST's developers published go-iost v4.0.0 on GitHub in mid-October 2026, and the first line of its notes calls it "a mandatory, backward-incompatible upgrade" for anyone running a node. Its previous release was v3.11.5 on 28 June 2024, so the node software went 838 days without a new version.
The notes describe maintenance work. The node moves to Go 1.27.2 and Ubuntu 26.04, and transaction handling, block validation and iWallet signing all get fixes. None of the listed changes touches tokenization or the Layer 2.
A backward-incompatible change means nodes left on the old code can't agree with upgraded ones, the split Phemex Academy's guide to hard forks and soft forks describes.
The IOST Foundation's Medium blog followed up the day before the jump with a mainnet upgrade announcement. It told exchanges, custodians and node operators that hadn't upgraded to install v4.0.0 immediately.
Neither the GitHub release nor the Medium announcement mentions IOST's price, so the record gives the timing of the jump and no stated cause.
Method: the ranking compares each of the 365 daily closes on CoinMarketCap in the year to the mid-October close with the close before it. Three of those days gained 20% or more, two gained 40% or more, and CoinGecko's daily series ranks the same two days first and second.
How Does IOST Work?
IOST's Layer 1 runs on block producers that the chain calls witnesses, and 17 of them were producing blocks in late October 2026, with the project's public node on software version 4.0.0.
The coin moves from that chain to BNB Chain through a bridge that iost.io links as its L1 Bridge, and in late October 2026 that bridge marked the BNB Chain-to-IOST direction as coming soon. On BNB Chain, IOST is a standard BEP-20 token, so it works with the same wallets and swap apps as any other BNB Chain asset.
The newer piece is PayFi, which IOST's site describes as a BNB Chain-based Layer-2 solution built on an optimistic rollup. The site says that design inherits "BNB Chain's high performance and low fees" and supports zero-knowledge proof checks on top.
Tokenization is the pitch that ties it together. The homepage sells IOST as infrastructure for turning bonds and real estate into on-chain tokens. Its pitch to institutions, "Deploy compliant RWA tokenization models on IOST Layer-2," names the Layer 2 directly. That's the use case Phemex Academy covers in tokenized real-world assets, applied to IOST's own networks.
Most of that tokenization talk points at the Layer 2, while the mid-October release went to the original chain.
IOST Tokenomics
IOST's own chain caps supply at 90 billion coins in its token record, and the BNB Chain contract carries the same 90 billion cap. Each chain keeps its own count, and coins locked on one side of a bridge can back coins issued on the other, so adding the two counts can double-count IOST.
Supply rules like these are the core of what tokenomics is and how it works, and IOST runs two sets of them.
The BNB Chain token can still be minted. Its contract belongs to a Safe multisig wallet that needs three of four signatures, and a simulated mint from that wallet succeeded in late October 2026. The same call from any other address failed.
Minting stops at the 90 billion cap, because a simulated mint one unit past it fails. The contract has no proxy in front of it, so its code can't be swapped, and holders get no vote on new supply.
How to Buy IOST Safely
Phemex has no live IOST perpetual or order-book spot pair. It delisted the IOSTUSDT perpetual in August 2026 under a notice dated 5 August, and its older 100IOST/USD perpetual is delisted as well. These checks apply wherever you buy the coin.
-
Pick the chain before you buy, since native IOST lives on IOST's own Layer 1 and the BEP-20 version lives on BNB Chain.
-
Match the BNB Chain contract 0xAf48B7e315a52518CfBF7d96C455D9dFAD94cB48 before you swap, because the real token's on-chain name is IOSToken.
-
Check the full name beside the ticker, because a search for IOST also turns up IOTA and IoTeX.
-
Bridge coins from IOST's own chain to BNB Chain only through the bridge that iost.io links, and send its minimum amount first because the way back was marked coming soon in late October 2026.
-
Keep the coins in a wallet you control, such as the iWalletPro extension for the native chain or any BNB Chain wallet for the BEP-20 token.
Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.
What Are the Risks of IOST?
A Multisig Can Add BNB Chain Supply
Three signers out of four can mint new BNB Chain IOST up to the cap, and nothing in the contract asks holders first. Any new tokens would dilute your share if you hold the BEP-20 version.
The Last Bigger Jump Reversed Fast
IOST's only bigger one-day gain in the year to mid-October 2026 came in early September, and its close fell 46.38% the day after. One reversal isn't a rule, but it's the only precedent of this size the year offers.
Development Went Quiet for More Than Two Years
The main branch of the go-iost repository on GitHub shows no commits between late June 2024 and early October 2026. One mandatory release after that gap is a start, and a single release doesn't make a steady development record.
Is IOST a Good Investment?
IOST is a high-risk bet on a seven-year-old chain whose Foundation pitches tokenization, and neither its GitHub release nor its Medium announcement gives a reason for the mid-October price jump.
What would have to be true: tokenized assets would need to show up on IOST's networks in amounts anyone can check on-chain, and the BNB Chain mint would need to stay unused or come under rules holders can see.
What the dated data shows: IOST's mid-October close of $0.001055 capped its second-largest daily gain in the year to mid-October 2026, its node software's release six days earlier was its first since late June 2024, and three of four signers can still mint on BNB Chain.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is IOST token?
IOST is the coin of the IOST blockchain, a Layer 1 that has produced blocks since February 2019, and it also exists as a BEP-20 token on BNB Chain. Both versions carry a 90 billion supply cap, and the BNB Chain contract's owner can still mint up to it.
What is IOST crypto used for?
The IOST Foundation pitches its networks for tokenizing real-world assets such as bonds and for payments through PayFi, a Layer 2 built on BNB Chain. The coin is the native currency of IOST's own Layer 1.
Why did IOST go up in October 2026?
IOST's close rose 41.04% in one mid-October 2026 day, six days after the go-iost v4.0.0 release and a day after the Foundation's upgrade announcement on Medium. Neither document mentions the price, so the dates line up without a stated cause.
Can you trade IOST on Phemex?
Phemex delisted its IOSTUSDT perpetual in August 2026, and its older 100IOST/USD perpetual was already delisted, so it offers no live IOST perpetual or order-book spot pair. Its IOST price page still tracks the coin.
Bottom Line
IOST spent more than two years without a node release, so a mandatory one tells you the chain still has people keeping it running. The next thing a buyer needs to see is tokenized assets anyone can count on IOST's networks, while three of four signers still hold the BNB Chain mint key.
