Litecoin vs Dogecoin pits a coin capped at 84 million against Dogecoin, the peer-to-peer currency that mints 10,000 new coins a block with no end date. Litecoin is the better payment coin to hold and Dogecoin the faster one to spend, though their Phemex closes from February 2024 to October 2026 moved the same way three days in four.
The gap in their swings is what sets the trap. In that window Dogecoin's daily moves ran a standard deviation of 4.74% against Litecoin's 3.75%, and it moved 10% or more in a day 49 times to Litecoin's 27. Pairing a calm coin with a wild one looks like a hedge on paper, yet on most days the two fell together or rose together.

What Is the Difference Between Litecoin and Dogecoin?
Litecoin is the older chain, with a genesis block dated 7 October 2011, and Dogecoin's genesis block followed on 6 December 2013. Litecoin's code stamps its first block with a New York Times headline on the death of Steve Jobs, and Dogecoin's stamps its own with the single word "Nintondo".
Dogecoin's own guide to how Dogecoin works says plainly that "Dogecoin is money" and that it can pay for goods and services or tip people on social media.
The deeper split is in the supply rules. Litecoin's block reward halves every 840,000 blocks toward a hard ceiling of 84 million coins, four times Bitcoin's 21 million. Our Litecoin vs Bitcoin Cash cap comparison traces that ceiling back to Litecoin's faster blocks. Dogecoin's reward stopped halving early in its life and has stayed flat ever since.
That gives Litecoin a known end state and Dogecoin a known yearly flow, two very different promises to a holder.
Litecoin vs Dogecoin: How Does Supply Compare?
Supply is where the two coins part ways hardest, and each chain's own code answers the questions searchers ask about it.
How Many Litecoin Coins Are There?
About 77.77 million Litecoin had been issued by the late-October close, or 92.6% of the cap, which leaves roughly 6.23 million to mine. The halving schedule sets the Litecoin max supply, as the first 840,000 blocks paid 50 coins each for 42 million and each later era adds half as much. The 84 million limit in amount.h matches it, though the file calls that limit a sanity check.
Each block pays 6.25 LTC, about 3,600 LTC a day at the 2.5-minute target.
Is Dogecoin Inflationary or Deflationary?
Dogecoin is inflationary. From block 600,000 its block subsidy code returns 10,000 DOGE under a comment that reads "Constant inflation", and at the one-minute target that comes to about 5.26 billion new coins a year.
That yearly flow equals 3.36% of the roughly 156.5 billion DOGE in circulation at the late-October close. The yearly rate shrinks as the same flow lands on a bigger base, but it doesn't reach zero.
So, there is no Dogecoin max supply, though the project rejects the word "unlimited". Its FAQ on putting a cap on Dogecoin says "Dogecoin's supply is not unlimited" because its issuance has an absolute limit per block, per day and per year. It adds that "The only difference is that Dogecoin's issuance does not have an end date."
Dogecoin's amount.h file also sets a 10 billion limit on a single amount, and the file's own comment calls that limit "a sanity check" on amounts. A note beside that line still names a 100 billion maximum, and the late-October supply ran about 57% above that old figure.
Litecoin vs Dogecoin: Which Is More Volatile?
Dogecoin closed 5% or more away from its previous close on 200 of the 999 days Phemex settled from February 2024 to October 2026, against 130 for Litecoin. That's 1.54 times as many big days for the meme coin.
If you put Bitcoin vs Litecoin vs Dogecoin side by side over the same stretch, Phemex's BTCUSDT perpetual moved that far on only 51 days. Litecoin logged about 2.5 times Bitcoin's count and Dogecoin close to four times.
The two coins closed in the same direction on 760 of those 999 days. They split on 238, and Dogecoin closed flat on the one day left over. The worst day of the window hit both at once, when Litecoin fell 23.21% and Dogecoin 22.21% on the close of 10 October 2025.
Method: a move is one daily close against the close before it on Phemex's LTCUSDT and DOGEUSDT perpetuals, across 1,000 daily bars from 2 February 2024 to the late-October close. A 5% day is a move of 5% or more in either direction, and the same direction means both coins closed up or both closed down.
Litecoin vs Dogecoin: How Do Mining and Speed Compare?
Dogecoin's consensus code targets a block every 60 seconds and Litecoin's targets one every 2.5 minutes, so Dogecoin's chain adds blocks two and a half times as often. If you're waiting on one confirmation, a Dogecoin payment clears sooner on average, and the gap grows with every extra confirmation a receiver asks for.
Both chains run the Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm, and that shared algorithm is what makes Litecoin Dogecoin merged mining possible. Dogecoin's guide to mining Dogecoin says miners "can mine Litecoin and any other classic Scrypt crypto and contribute also to the Dogecoin network, receiving the mining rewards from multiple blockchains at once for the same amount of work."
Dogecoin's code has accepted that auxiliary proof of work since block 371,337.
Litecoin vs Dogecoin: How Did They Trade in 2026?
Both coins lost ground in 2026. Litecoin closed late October at 59.21 USDT on its Phemex perpetual, down 22.93% from 76.83 on the last day of 2025. Dogecoin did worse, closing at 0.07973 USDT for a 32.09% fall from 0.1174. On the day of that close Litecoin rose 3.51% and Dogecoin 0.90%.
The ratio between them tells the same story from another side. One Litecoin bought 742.6 DOGE at the late-October close, up 13.49% from 654.4 at the end of 2025. From 1 January 2026 to the late-October close that ratio ranged from 490.2 on 5 May to 757.7 on 3 October, so the late-October reading stood a little below its high for that stretch.
Where Does the Litecoin vs Dogecoin Price Outlook Stand?
Litecoin's 50-day average crossed above its 200-day on 23 September 2026, a golden cross, and the late-October close sat 13.52% above the 200-day. The Litecoin (LTC) price page on Phemex charts the coin's price.
Dogecoin went the other way. Its 50-day average slipped under its 200-day at the late-October close, a death cross by a gap of only 0.026%, and that close sat 7.94% under the 200-day. The cross came 23 days after a golden cross on 5 October 2026, and in between the 50-day topped out 1.65% above the 200-day.

Is Litecoin Better Than Dogecoin?
Litecoin is better than Dogecoin on supply and on steadiness, and Dogecoin is better on speed and on trading volume. A Litecoin holder knows the final count, and a Dogecoin holder knows the yearly flow. Litecoin had 70 fewer big days across the 999 Phemex days. Dogecoin's blocks come faster. Its market on Phemex is also the busier one.
That volume showed on the day of the late-October close, when DOGEUSDT turned over $13.19 million on Phemex against $4.88 million for LTCUSDT. That's 2.70 times Litecoin's dollar volume, so a trader sizing a position on Phemex found more room in Dogecoin.
Which Is Better, Litecoin or Dogecoin?
For a payment coin you hold between purchases, Litecoin is the better pick on this evidence, because its supply stops at 84 million and its daily swings ran smaller from 2024 to 2026. A spot purchase follows the three steps in how to buy Litecoin on Phemex.
If you need a payment to land on chain quickly, Dogecoin's one-minute target wins, and so does its busier Phemex market for an active trader. Its spot route runs through how to buy Dogecoin on Phemex.
Both LTCUSDT and DOGEUSDT perpetuals have traded on Phemex since November 2022, with up to 50x leverage and funding every eight hours. Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Litecoin a good investment?
Litecoin's supply is capped at 84 million coins, with about 92.6% issued by the late-October close, and it swung less than Dogecoin from 2024 to 2026. Its price still fell 22.93% in 2026 to that close, so the cap alone didn't protect holders from a falling market.
Is Dogecoin a good investment?
Dogecoin fell 32.09% in 2026 to the late-October close, and from February 2024 it moved 5% or more on 200 of 999 Phemex days. At its one-minute target the supply grows about 5.26 billion coins a year, so any case for it rests on demand outrunning that flow.
Is Dogecoin a meme coin?
Yes. The Dogecoin project's own pages say the Shiba Inu dog "was popularized as an online meme and represents Dogecoin." It also runs as a working proof-of-work chain with its own miners, and it shares Scrypt mining work with Litecoin.
Can you mine Litecoin and Dogecoin at the same time?
Yes. Both chains use Scrypt, and Dogecoin accepts proof of work done for Litecoin through merged mining, so one Scrypt rig earns block rewards on both chains. Dogecoin's mining guide says most pools let miners mine Litecoin and contribute to the Dogecoin network at once.
Bottom Line
The two coins differ on supply, on block speed and on the size of their swings, yet from 2024 to 2026 their prices mostly moved together.
The trap is reading those differences as a diversifier. On 178 of Dogecoin's 200 big days from February 2024 to October 2026, Litecoin closed the same way, so over this window holding both spread little of the risk.
