Andre Cronje is the founder of Flying Tulip and the creator of Yearn Finance who resigned from the Sonic Labs board in June 2026. His crypto record runs from Fantom in 2018 through Yearn and Keep3r in 2020 to Sonic Labs, where he served as chief technology officer from August 2024.
The label that follows him, Fantom founder, is one both sides of his Sonic exit reject in writing. Cronje's own statement dates Fantom's incorporation to 7 June 2018 and his appointment as a director to 13 December 2022, 1,650 days later. His role was technical from the start, first as an advisor and later as the CTO who led the design of Sonic's network.

Who Is Andre Cronje?
Andre Cronje is the DeFi builder who created Yearn Finance in 2020 to automate the hunt for the best lending rate, and he founded Flying Tulip, which launched in February 2026. Flying Tulip is his main job, and his own site also lists him as chief technology officer at Witnessnet, a company that builds zkTLS infrastructure for blockchain-authenticated web requests.
From 2018 to 2026 his engineering went into Fantom and then into Sonic, the ex-Fantom chain behind the S token, a different project from Sonic SVM and its SONIC token.
If you search for Andre Cronje outside crypto, you'll meet namesakes such as the cricketer Hansie Cronje, so adding Yearn or Flying Tulip to the query finds the builder.
Andre Cronje's Career and Education
Cronje studied law at Stellenbosch University, then took computer science coursework at CTI Education Group and worked in technical roles before he moved into crypto.
Cronje entered crypto in 2018 as a technical advisor to Fantom. In 2020 he built iEarn, a tool that moved deposits to whichever DeFi lending venue paid the most, and it grew into Yearn Finance. Yearn's later vaults automated whole yield-farming strategies for depositors, and our guide to how yield farming in cryptocurrency works covers the manual version.
Yearn's YFI token went out with no founder allocation, its first 30,000 coins all paid to liquidity providers. Keep3r Network followed the same year as a market where protocols post jobs and independent keepers carry them out.
In 2022 Cronje designed the original ve33 model, which ties vote-escrowed governance to the emissions and fees that reward liquidity providers. Other DEXs later adapted the design, and his own record makes no claim that he founded or controls them. Liquidity mining of this kind is one of three DeFi income routes compared in our guide to yield farming vs staking vs liquidity mining.
On 13 August 2024 Sonic Labs made Andre Cronje its chief technology officer in place of Quan Nguyen, and he was already a director of the company.
His brief was the new Sonic network and above all Sonic Gateway, a native bridge for moving assets from chains such as Ethereum to Sonic with a failsafe that lets users recover funds on the chain they bridged from.
Did Andre Cronje Found Fantom?
No. Sonic Labs' announcement of the board change says Cronje "was not the Founder of Fantom Foundation" and joined after its formation. The post adds that Fantom publicly named him Technical Advisor in 2018 and that he later served as a director and as Sonic Labs' CTO.
Cronje's own statement on the resignation separates forming a company from creating its technology. He says he originated Fantom's core technical architecture and, with Quan Nguyen, led the team that built the working network.
Cronje also lists the decisions he says he didn't own, from the FTM-to-S migration and the Sonic airdrop to the tokenomics of both chains. His position, he says, was that the old Opera network and the Ethereum version of FTM should both stay supported. And he admits to using "co-founder" informally for his technical role, a shorthand he calls imprecise because it merged forming the company with building the technology.
So the label both documents support is narrower, Fantom's technical advisor from 2018 who rose to director and then to chief technology officer of Sonic Labs.
Why Did Andre Cronje Leave the Sonic Labs Board?
Andre Cronje left the Sonic Labs board in a leadership change that Sonic announced on 19 June 2026, when he resigned as a director alongside Michael Kong and David Richardson.
Sonic's post gives no personal reason for any of the three. It says the departing directors "will no longer make business decisions for the organization" and names Matt Visser as chief executive and Kosta Kourkoumelis as chief operating officer. The post says their first priority is "operational discipline and earning back trust, in that order."
Cronje's statement calls Sonic's announcement accurate and gives the closest thing to a reason. "For the past 18 months, my primary focus has been building Flying Tulip," he wrote. "I will continue that work." Sonic Labs adds that he'll serve as a technical advisor when called upon. Kong and Richardson stay on as trusted advisors to the company as well.
What Is Flying Tulip?
Flying Tulip is the onchain financial system Andre Cronje founded so that trading and lending draw on one pool of collateral, with ftUSD as its own stablecoin.
It announced a $200 million private-round commitment in September 2025, and Cronje's own record of the projectwarns that the headline is a commitment, a different number from the capital that arrived.
Flying Tulip's 20 February 2026 update put the capital funded and held at $183.9 million after refunds and exits. That total spans every tranche, the public sale that followed the private round included, so it doesn't measure the private round alone.
Flying Tulip launched on 23 February 2026 and rolls products out in guarded stages. The pieces released or rolling out include onchain PUT positions and the ftUSD stablecoin, along with margin lending and early delta-neutral strategies.
The PUT is what sets Flying Tulip's FT token apart. Primary buyers got FT at a fixed 10 FT per $1, an implied $0.10, and every primary position carries a perpetual put that lets the holder exit at par for the same asset and amount they paid in. That makes it a put option with no expiry date, the instrument our guide to how crypto options work explains.
Each position is an NFT called an ftPUT that can be sold on Flying Tulip's marketplace, and withdrawing the FT to trade it freely cancels the put for good. FT bought on the open market carries no put at all, and the team took no initial FT allocation from a fixed supply of 10 billion.
A put pays off when the price falls below its strike, the mirror image of a call, and our explainer on call vs put optionssets the two side by side.
FT has no perpetual on Phemex, so the futures links on this page take you to Phemex's wider crypto futures board. Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.
