Lightspark has launched Spark, an open-source layer 2 protocol designed to improve Bitcoin's scalability by enabling instant, low-cost payments without intermediaries. Released on April 29, 2025, Spark facilitates seamless interactions between wallets and applications across Bitcoin and Lightning networks. Utilizing a statechain-based approach, it allows off-chain UTXO transfers, significantly reducing costs and transaction times. Spark is interoperable with the Lightning Network and supports bitcoin, stablecoins, and tokenized assets. Managed by Lightspark and Flashnet, the network ensures user control over funds, with Spark Service Providers (SSPs) overseeing transactions. Users can exit the network unilaterally if necessary. While Spark transactions are fee-free, minimal fees apply to Bitcoin on-chain operations. The protocol also integrates the LRC20 token standard, enabling stablecoin issuance, and has partnered with Theya and Breez to expand its ecosystem.
