The Central Bank of Indonesia has announced plans to introduce a digital version of the Indonesian Rupiah, leveraging distributed ledger technology. The rollout of the digital Rupiah, known as SRBI, will occur in phases, starting with the testing of digital securities issuance, transfers, and withdrawals between 2025 and 2026. Subsequent phases from 2027 to 2028 will focus on monetary operations and financial market transactions.
By 2029 to 2030, the digital Rupiah will incorporate advanced features such as programmability, composability, and tokenization. This initiative is part of the central bank's "Payment System Blueprint 2030," aiming to modernize Indonesia's financial infrastructure and enhance the efficiency of its payment systems.
