The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has initiated its second significant cryptocurrency tax investigation, focusing on 2,500 users of Dapper Labs. This move comes as part of the CRA's ongoing efforts to enhance tax compliance within the crypto sector, having recovered over CAD 100 million from crypto audits in the past three years. Despite these efforts, the CRA has not filed any criminal charges since 2020, citing difficulties in identifying taxpayers and ensuring compliance.
The CRA's dedicated crypto team has reviewed more than 230 documents, revealing that approximately 40% of crypto platform users are non-compliant with tax regulations. Of the five criminal investigations launched since 2020, four remain unresolved, largely due to the complexities and cross-border challenges involved.
